Last weekend I spent the weekend in Prince Edward County with my mom and sister and it was incredible! We went to celebrate my sister Samantha’s 25th birthday. It was such a great weekend and I already want to go back! We ate, shopped, and stayed at the nicest winery. So, today I thought I would do a mini guide to the county in case you’re planning a trip this spring. There is so much to do and see in the county, so this is just a look at what we got up to:
Where we Stayed
We stayed at the Huff Estates Inn, which I would totally recommend! Our room was so cozy and each room comes with its own patio, which is such a nice touch. The inn is very modern and only has 21 rooms so it’s very quiet and relaxing. We stayed in a deluxe room which was so nice but they offer premium suites as well if you’re looking for something a bit more fancy. The staff was very helpful and friendly too!
There is an abundance of restaurants in the county! With so many to choose from it was hard to decide, but I think we made some really great choices. As a vegan eating out can be somewhat of a challenge. A lot of times a garden salad and fries are my only options but I was pleasantly surprised that I didn’t have to order that once while we were away!
We arrived in Picton around lunchtime on Saturday and decided to go to The County Canteen for a bite to eat. The rustic decor was very much my style and to my delight they offered a vegan burger (that doesn’t contain soy) on the menu! My burger and fries were delicious and kept me satisfied until dinner. They have a great wine selection too! My mom ordered the fish tacos and Sam had the non-vegan burger which they both loved as well!
Dinner was a bit tricky as a lot of the restaurants in the county are smaller and require a reservation which we didn’t have. We ended up going to Portabella for dinner as they could seat us and accommodate a vegan. This restaurant was so cute and the staff was really friendly. I had a pasta dish for dinner which had portobello mushrooms, tomatoes, and spinach tossed in a garlic, basil, olive oil sauce. This was hands down my favourite meal of the weekend and my favourite meal I’ve had since going vegan! It was so delicious and I can’t wait to try recreating it at home. My mom and Sam both got the fettuccine alfredo which they loved too! The wine selection here was great too – I ordered one of my favourite wines which is the Baco Noir from Sandbanks.
Breakfast was included in our stay at the inn so that’s what we opted to do. My mom and Sam said breakfast was very enjoyable. I on the other hand was only able to eat fruit, so it wasn’t the most satisfying meal for me.
For lunch on Sunday we stopped at the Waupoos Estates Winery. I was starving at this point and was happy to see the restaurant there had a vegan curry on the menu! The decor of the restaurant was absolutely beautiful with lots of natural light and succulents on every table. The curry I ordered was so delicious and my mom and sam enjoyed their pastas too. The wine selection here was a bit more limited than the other restaurants we visited but we all still found something we loved!
There are so many quaint little shops in downtown Picton that we visited. My personal favourite was a little boutique called Coriander Girl. Inside were tons of gorgeous plants and succulents, dried lavender, candles, and self care products. It is such a beautiful store and I already can’t wait to go back!
Aside from that, we stopped in a beautiful jewellery store called Innovative Jewellery. It was owned by a husband and wife duo with tons of gorgeous pieces. She makes almost everything in the shop herself and there are so many options to choose from. No matter what your style is, you’ll be able to find something perfect for you!
Those were the two standout stores for me, but there are lots more to choose from! There are health food stores, toy stores, clothing stores, and even a theatre all on the main street.
My guide wouldn’t be complete without mentioning the wine as that is what the county is most known for! As I mentioned we stayed at the Huff Estates Inn which has a winery on site. A complimentary tasting was offered with our stay, so we definitely went over and participated. For my tasting I tried the sauvignon blanc, the pinot noir, and their All Day Rosé. All of the wines were amazing and I ended up buying a bottle of the pinot noir and the rosé to take home with me!
I also had wine at every meal too, because why not? At lunch I opted to have a glass of the Huff Estates rosé which was really good. At dinner I had the Sandbanks Baco Noir which is an old favourite of mine. And, at lunch the following day I had the Waupoos Winery Frontenac red which was very good as well! I didn’t have a glass of wine all weekend that I didn’t love!
Have you been to Prince Edward County before?
